CANADA STUDENT VISA – HOW TO APPLY
Every year, many young people go online to check their Canadian student visa. Apparently, they want to study in Canada. To study in Canada, you basically need a Canadian study permit. In some cases where the duration of your course or study is less than 6 months, you may not need a study permit.
However, it is important that you obtain this study permit before you move to Canada. The reason is; if you decide to continue your studies in another program, you will have to leave Canada and then apply for one. I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t want that stress.
Here’s the catch; if you have your Canadian study permit before you move to Canada and it expires while you are there, you can renew the permit in Canada. This of course saves you a lot of stress and money.
For those who are full-time students duly enrolled in an accredited higher education institution, the study permit can help you work within your school. In addition, you can work off-campus, or even as an intern in a company related to your main study programme. Very importantly, having a Study Permit can help you stay in Canada after your studies and apply for permanent residence.
APPLICATION PROCESS FOR CANADIAN STUDY PERMIT
There are basically two ways you can apply for the Canadian study permit. One is applying online and the other is by a physical paper application. Instructions on how to do that can be found on the Citizenship and Immigration Canada, CIC website. Applying online is super faster. Using the paper option takes as long as about 2 times the duration of the online option.
If you choose to apply online (which is faster), you will need to get your credit/debit card ready for online payment. Also, you need electronic copies of the required documents handy. The immigration office in your country will inform you of the necessary documents you’ll be needing. These document requirements vary based on country location.
HOW TO OBTAIN A CANADIAN STUDENT VISA
Step 1. The very first and most crucial thing if you wish to obtain your Canada Student Visa is to obtain an official letter of acceptance from a recognized higher education institution in Canada. It doesn’t stop there for students who wish to study in Quebec. A Certificate of Acceptance aka CAQ must be issued to the student by the government. All of these requirements can be obtained online, so no sweat.
Step 2. When you are done with the above, the next step is to obtain the Canada Student Visa Application Package. This can be obtained from the CIC website. An alternative, but not recommended, is to visit a Canadian visa office or embassy in your country to apply. The latter takes longer and can be very time and energy consuming.
Step 3. You will be asked questions about biological data on the CIC website. These questions will tell you whether you are eligible or not. You must answer them correctly in order to obtain your student visa application. Do NOT enter any incorrect information. Make sure that everything you enter is verifiable.
Step 4. When the results of the questions you have been asked are available and you have been found eligible, you will receive a personal checklist code, valid for 60 days. This checklist code is what you will use when submitting your application online. Make sure you print the page containing the code and have an electronic copy for future reference. This page will also contain a detailed application guide, estimated tuition fees, and a list of critical documents you will need to submit.
Step 5. Create a MyCIC account when you are ready to apply. This is where you will enter the code for your personal checklist that was provided to you in Step 4. You will then receive your personal document checklist which will allow you to upload and send your documents to CIC. You will need a printer or scanner to do this.
Step 6. This is where you submit your application to CIC. Before submitting, make sure that all the documents are ready and that you have also paid your fees. If everything is ticked, go ahead and submit.
Step 7. It depends! Some applicants may be invited to an interview at the visa office in their country of residence.
After applying, what next?
If your application is approved, you will receive a Port of Entry Letter of Introduction (POE), while students from countries requiring an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) and/or a Temporary Resident Visa will receive these if required. The ETA will be linked to your passport. It is important that you travel with the passport you used when you applied for your study permit. The EVA will be valid for five years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.
Present it, along with your passport, proof of finances and your letter of acceptance (and any other documents you have been advised to bring) to the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) in Canada, who will then issue your Canadian Study Permit and allow you access to Canada.
I wish you all the best with your application for a Canada Student Visa. Remember, sharing is caring, share this post to enlighten others.
